Here's the present-day Metalface, who earned his nickname for obvious reasons. I'm not sure what it is about this character that fascinated me, but it may have been the way he -- and many of the others -- went from absolute certainty that they were Correct and Superior to doubting the established order, and themselves. In Metalface's case, it has to be ugly to doubt his support of the Machine Emperor, since he wears it permanently!
