One of the things that makes Jin such a dangerous guy to have as an opponent is that he doesn't look like a top-notch swordsman. He looks like a bookworm. He's got a very thin face, and his robes hide his form so well that he might easily be just some clerk carrying around a samurai sword because it's a family heirloom.
