In one of the first filler arcs post-Kyoto, Kenshin and friends head off to stop Shougo Amakusa, a failed student of the 12th Hiko Seijuro, Sir Hyouei. Shougo styles himself "Son of God" and is bent on taking revenge for the lives lost in the persecution of Christians in Japan rather than in using his skills to assist them. Like most everyone else, he's bent on eliminating the threat of Kenshin's strength, because Kenshin is the only person on the planet capable of stopping his revenge.

Kenshin and Sano are walking down a cave toward the secret cathedral when they encounter a weird man with even stranger dogs. Lots of them. With red eyes. And of course they all attack. Kenshin invokes one of the lessons he taught Yahiko - first, we run. Then we find a spot where we can take them on one at a time. "Run, Sano!" he yells...
