Kenshin is already bleeding from dual neck wounds received in his fight with Aoshi, when the battle with Sojiro comes about. Sojiro's speed is such that Kenshin can't evade a brutal slash that lays his back partially open - but he does survive the attack, much to Sojiro's annoyance.
