{"id":2052,"date":"2018-08-06T22:11:25","date_gmt":"2018-08-06T22:11:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/?page_id=2052"},"modified":"2020-02-23T17:00:15","modified_gmt":"2020-02-23T17:00:15","slug":"chapter-17","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/volume-iii\/part-i-andante\/chapter-17\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapter 17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It wasn\u2019t as though the trip from Solitude to the boat jetty opposite Volkihar Castle was that long.\u00a0 It certainly wasn\u2019t that arduous.\u00a0 There was the usual complement of wolves, but there were three of them and even he, at this point the weakest of them, was able to take out a wolf with a single swing of his axe.\u00a0 The day was overcast, to begin with, with that sharp scent in the air that hinted of impending snow.\u00a0 And then it did begin to snow, and the world became hushed, close, and even colder.<\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2019s a fine day to be a vampire.\u00a0 Too bad I\u2019m not one.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No, the problem wasn\u2019t the travel.<\/p>\n<p>The problem was that Serana wouldn\u2019t stop talking.\u00a0 He was feverish, he was anxious to get through this, and every time she opened her mouth he wanted to turn around and rip out her throat.<\/p>\n<p><em>Except that I don\u2019t have the fangs, and she does. And I suspect hers are stronger than mine would be, regardless. This one is a pure-blood. I can feel it.\u00a0 It\u2019s the only explanation for her strength, after being locked away for\u2026 how long, after all, if she didn\u2019t even know about the Empire.\u00a0 At any rate, all I can do is grin and bear it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Andante was garrulous enough, even showy, around Brynjolf and his other friends in both the Guild and the Dark Brotherhood, but only in fits and starts. He was by nature a quiet man, a loner, secretive. It was one of his most important defenses, being quiet, and non-stop chatter grated on him in the most irritating of all possible ways.<\/p>\n<p>But he kept thinking about the castle.\u00a0 He wanted that castle, and it was clear that Serana was very likely the key to the front gates.<\/p>\n<p><em>Once I\u2019m inside, all bets are off.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He tried to be sociable.\u00a0 Serana carried an object on her back that looked to him like a scroll. The problem was that it was so much larger than any scroll he\u2019d ever run across before.\u00a0 As they walked along, as he tried to block out her chatter, his mind cast back on everything he\u2019d ever read about the wisdom of scrolls.\u00a0 Slowly, an idea dawned on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSerana, that object you\u2019re carrying.\u00a0 Is that, by any stretch of the imagination, an Elder Scroll?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2054\" src=\"https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/3-1-17-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/3-1-17-1.png 1920w, https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/3-1-17-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/3-1-17-1-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/3-1-17-1-1024x576.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>She stopped in her tracks and turned to face him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes it is. And it\u2019s mine, thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stood, clenching his teeth, his hands balled into fists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid I, in any way whatsoever, even suggest a hint of a desire to take it from you?\u00a0 I do not believe that I did, thank <em>you. <\/em>I\u2019ve merely been attempting to gain some understanding of our situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLad,\u201d Brynjolf said, quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Bryn, I\u2019m serious.\u00a0 We need to know what we\u2019re going to be facing.\u00a0 I can\u2019t imagine why someone would confine Serana in a puzzle-locked stone sarcophagus, underground, for what is clearly almost an eternity, unless there was a truly important reason to do so.\u00a0 And that thing on her back, if it is an Elder Scroll, might be just that important reason.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She crossed her arms and glared at him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told you that I would fill you in once we get to my home, and that\u2019s what I meant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andante seethed.\u00a0 <em>I\u2019m sure I need her to be alive, for some reason. That doesn\u2019t mean I have to like her.<\/em>\u00a0 He turned on his heel and continued on his way. Serana followed, but at a fairly good distance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAndante,\u201d Brynjolf murmured as he caught up. \u201cReally, lad. There\u2019s no reason to antagonize her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, there isn\u2019t. And that\u2019s why I intend to keep my distance. Her incessant chatter and whining is making me want you to turn me right now so that I can rip out her throat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brynjolf chuckled. \u201cAnd do you really think you could, even if I did that? I don\u2019t. Can\u2019t you sense it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andante snorted. \u201cYes, I can. I\u2019m certain that she\u2019s a pure blood. And that makes it all the worse.\u00a0 Let\u2019s\u2026 just get there, shall we?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brynjolf leaned closer. \u201cAre you feeling all right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andante laughed, a quick burst of bitter laughter without humor.\u00a0 \u201cAre you mad? \u00a0No, of course I\u2019m not.\u00a0 Not at all.\u00a0 I\u2019m feverish and there\u2019s the other thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell,\u201d Brynjolf shook his head and sighed.\u00a0 \u201cI hate to suggest it, but you can do something about the other thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Not after what happened with Falion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot a good idea.\u00a0 That last batch was entirely too strong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brynjolf stopped cold and seized Andante\u2019s arm, turning him around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait just a moment. What do you mean by \u2018that last batch?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mean, my dear, just what I said. The last batch I made was just far too potent for me to handle, at least as a human. You saw what happened in Morthal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brynjolf shook his head. \u201cYou <em>made<\/em> it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andante sighed. \u201cYes, Brynjolf. I made it. I cooked it myself. How in the name of all the gods do you suppose I have been able to support what you yourself called a powerful habit all this time on the kind of money I make from doing small errands for Jarls and minor contracts for the Listener?\u00a0 There\u2019s only so much of it floating around out there to steal.\u00a0 How do you think I got that many bottles of it into Honeyside? And where do you imagine I came by the wealth you saw in my home in the span of just a couple of years?\u00a0 I woke up with nothing. People will pay a great deal of money for decent skooma. I found a way to not only supplement my income but support the habit as well.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t take me an awfully long time for that to rear its ugly head after I \u2026 woke up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brynjolf was staring at him, mouth half-open.\u00a0 \u201cSo you\u2019ve really known what was going on with your body all this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andante looked away. \u201cWell not really. Not\u2026 well\u2026 I suppose so, although I swear to you I did not realize how bad it was. I\u2019ve always known I had the habit but as far as being truly addicted, well, no, either I didn\u2019t realize or couldn\u2019t realize it, and after I was a vampire it didn\u2019t much matter. Yes, I know how ridiculous that sounds but I promise you it\u2019s the truth.\u201d\u00a0 Then he turned to smile at Brynjolf again.\u00a0 \u201cAnd I am telling you that that last batch was strong enough to shake the food and the dishes holding it off the table and into the air. I didn\u2019t realize it until it was too late. But it certainly felt like it was the room moving and not just me. \u00a0<\/em>All he had known for certain, at the end, as he stood gaping at the floor of the kitchen with a broom in his hand and every utensil, dish, and food item he owned scattered to the four corners, was that his Housecarl Jordis was, without a doubt, going to kill him.<\/p>\n<p>He chuckled under his breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s so funny?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI, uh\u2026 was remembering the worst batch I ever made.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t pretty.\u00a0 It\u2019s a good thing Jordis is forgiving but it did take the two of us a long time to clean up.\u201d\u00a0 He smiled and started walking again. \u201cI suppose that if we live through all of this we could talk about setting up a bit of a side business if you like. Give it a brand name. \u2018Thane of Solitude.\u2019 Better than Balmora Blue. We could make a great deal of money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brynjolf gave him a startled glance, and then sighed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, lad, it\u2019s an interesting thought. A great deal of money is always an interesting idea. Let me consider it. Of course, if we ever find Dagnell it will be out of the question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andante nodded, but pouted, internally.\u00a0 <em>If we ever find Dagnell <\/em>I\u2019ll <em>be out of the question. Why would she think I care? Is she<\/em> \u2013 he stopped cold for a moment as the thought struck him \u2013 <em>is she by some sick chance of fate attracted to me and thinks I might be harboring the same kinds of thoughts?<\/em>\u00a0 He shuddered and began trotting up the long arched ramp leading to the castle.\u00a0 Just before the gates Serana\u2019s voice stopped him again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOk, so, before we go in there,\u201d she began.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is it <em>now<\/em>?\u201d he snapped, and then immediately regretted having done so.\u00a0 <em>That really wasn\u2019t required of me, was it? <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFine. Don\u2019t worry about it,\u201d she replied behind him.\u00a0 \u201cWhen we get in, you won\u2019t have to babysit me anymore.\u201d He could hear that he\u2019d at least offended her, if not downright hurt her, and found himself feeling a bit bad about that. But he couldn\u2019t think of any appropriate response.\u00a0 He sighed, and continued toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>Serana was, in fact, the key to the door.\u00a0 Not only did the gate guard not stop them once he saw Serana, but the welcome inside was remarkable. A white-haired vampire snarled at Andante.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow dare you trespass here?\u201d he began, until Serana stepped up beside Andante.\u00a0 \u201cWait. Serana? Is that truly you? I cannot believe my eyes!\u201d He turned and strode to a balcony, at the top of twin staircases leading down into an enormous, almost sinister great room. The ceiling was supported by long, gracefully-curved pillars and each opening from the room was set into a pointed, elegant archway of the type they\u2019d seen in Dimhollow Crypt. Below them were long tables, covered with silver dishes and ewers holding what were clearly human remains and blood.\u00a0 There were a number of vampires seated around the tables; and the sounds of plates clinking and teeth crunching on bone echoed through the great vaulted space.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hmm. Mealtime, it would seem. <\/em>The part of him that remembered being a vampire was impressed by the lavish spread even while his currently-human stomach turned at the sight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy lord! Everyone!\u201d the vampire cried, his voice rebounding through the great stone hall.\u00a0 \u201cSerana has returned!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Serana muttered, a sarcastic edge to her tone. \u201cI guess I\u2019m expected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andante found his mouth curling up into a smile in spite of himself. \u00a0<em>That was amusing. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>A voice sounded from the room below; and Andante exchanged a glance with Brynjolf.\u00a0 It was a deeply cultured voice, one that spoke of being accustomed to deference, to obedience.\u00a0 It spoke of long ages past.\u00a0 And it carried overtones of great power.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat must be him,\u201d Brynjolf murmured.<\/p>\n<p>Andante couldn\u2019t see the man, so he simply followed Serana down the stairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy long-lost daughter returns at last,\u201d the elegant voice said.\u00a0 \u201cI trust that you have my Elder Scroll?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andante looked at Brynjolf again, and Brynjolf nodded.\u00a0 <em>We were right. That\u2019s what they were after.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter all these years, that\u2019s the first thing you ask me?\u201d Serana replied. \u201cYes, I have the scroll.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The assembled vampires started buzzing amongst themselves.\u00a0 \u201cShe\u2019s back! She has the Scroll!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>That was harsh of him.\u00a0 Even I can imagine a more appropriate greeting to a long-lost family member, and as far as I know I have no family.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2057\" src=\"https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/3-1-17-4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/3-1-17-4.png 1920w, https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/3-1-17-4-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/3-1-17-4-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/3-1-17-4-1024x576.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He reached the bottom of the stairs and moved forward, looking at the figure from which the harsh words had come.\u00a0 And smiled, even as the man continued to issue platitudes and greetings that were anything but what one might expect from a loving father.<\/p>\n<p>Andante had been able to sense Serana\u2019s power, and so had Brynjolf.\u00a0 Harkon \u2013 for it was clear that the man in the lush, pristine black-and-red vampire robes with beige pauldrons could be none other than Harkon \u2013 simply radiated power.\u00a0 Andante glanced at Brynjolf and saw his eyes round; he nodded almost imperceptibly at Andante.<\/p>\n<p><em>He feels it too. This one is immeasurably strong. And ancient.\u00a0 <\/em>He was also elegant, with impeccably-groomed coal-black hair and beard and high cheekbones, striking in every way.\u00a0 <em>By the Eight what a handsome man.\u00a0 I\u2019d almost think him my type, if not for Brynjolf. <\/em>A heartbeat or two went by. <em>No, that\u2019s not quite right. He is my type. In spite of Brynjolf. \u00a0<\/em>He was startled for a moment, realizing that he\u2019d had that thought, and fought to keep himself from frowning.\u00a0 <em>Where did that come from? How ridiculous.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As Harkon continued to talk it became all the more obvious how little he was concerned for anyone aside from himself.\u00a0 And Andante found himself more and more excited.\u00a0 <em>He\u2019s just like me.\u00a0 But stronger. So much stronger.\u00a0 I want him to be the one who turns me, not whichever of the weak vampires in Dimhollow Crypt gave me this virus.<\/em>\u00a0 He glanced at Brynjolf.\u00a0 <em>I love you, Bryn, but this has to be the one who does it.\u00a0 I hope you will understand.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Harkon turned to him.\u00a0 \u201cNow tell me,\u201d he said loudly, \u201cwho is this \u2013 stranger \u2013 you have brought into our hall?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my savior,\u201d Serana replied.\u00a0 \u201cThe one who freed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Savior? Really?<\/em>\u00a0 Andante shuddered.\u00a0 <em>She just doesn\u2019t understand that she\u2019s simply a means to an end. I would happily have left her there if there\u2019d been another way to get into this greatroom. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Harkon spoke to him, asked his name, determined that yes, he knew they were vampires.\u00a0 Andante hoped his eyes weren\u2019t glimmering too much, that he wasn\u2019t looking too eager, but he knew his heart was pounding and that Harkon could hear it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot just vampires,\u201d Harkon purred. \u201cWe are among the oldest and most powerful vampires in Skyrim.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Yes, and I\u2019m among the youngest and most powerful, if you\u2019ll just turn me again.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor centuries we lived here, far from the cares of the world. All that ended when my wife betrayed me and stole away that which I valued most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andante looked into Harkon\u2019s eyes and fought back the urge to sneer.\u00a0 <em>And that was not Serana, was it. It was the Scroll she carries on her back.\u00a0 You\u2019re a cold man, Harkon. I like you. I really like you. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>He realized what he was thinking and an involuntary shudder ran up his spine.\u00a0 <em>Where did that come from? That was raw even for me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He finally managed to speak. He thought carefully about what he\u2019d learned from Babette, knowing that if her argument had been compelling enough to convince him to become human again, it might also carry some weight with Harkon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I know of your clan. I also have reason to believe that the Dawnguard is planning to target it, first, before any other groups of vampires.\u00a0 Perhaps it is that you are the strongest, and thus pose the greatest challenge to them. I do not know for certain.\u201d He stopped for a moment and smiled, knowing that Harkon had to be able to read his face, to see how alike they were at some deep level. \u00a0\u201cShould I not receive some sort of \u2013 reward \u2013 for rescuing your\u2026 daughter?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Goodness, Andante, tone it down. He can tell what you are without laying it on so thick.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Harkon smiled knowingly. Andante fought down the urge to sigh at the gorgeous smile.\u00a0 <em>What am I thinking? What am I doing?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, you have done me a great service, and now you must be rewarded.\u00a0 There is but one gift I can give that is equal in value to the Elder Scroll.\u00a0 And my daughter.\u00a0 I offer you my blood\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>YES.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake it and you will walk as a lion among sheep\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>YES.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMen will tremble at your approach and you will never fear death again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>YES.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, unbidden, almost as though it was someone else\u2019s, a thought arose in his mind. \u00a0<em>But I\u2019m going to play with you first. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if I refuse this gift?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>What am I saying? <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen you will be prey, like all mortals. I will spare your life this once but you will be banished from this hall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Oh no, Harkon. This hall is mine. You just don\u2019t know it yet. Just wait.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerhaps you still need convincing.\u00a0 Behold the power!\u201d Harkon bellowed.<\/p>\n<p>Then he changed.\u00a0 His body contorted; he grabbed his chest and turned red and smoky.\u00a0 He flung his head up and arched backward, and with a resounding snap his body changed into something completely different.<\/p>\n<p>He looked like a gargoyle \u2013 greenish-grey like the stones of a gargoyle\u2019s appearance while still \u2013 with bat-like wings, long, sweeping pointed ears, and truly wicked claws at the tips of long, elegant fingers and toes. He wore armor, of a sort, but it barely covered his hugely muscled torso.\u00a0 And his face was sublimely and beautifully hideous, with its terrifying fangs visible.<\/p>\n<p>Andante was transfixed.\u00a0 Part of him, the part that liked pretty men and pretty outfits, was horrified by the ugly creature that stood before him.\u00a0 A part of him, however \u2013 a part he was unfamiliar with and more than a little unsettled by &#8212; was shrieking at him. <em>Yes! This is the one! Yes!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the power that I offer,\u201d Harkon said, his voice filling the hall. \u201cNow make your choice!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andante struggled to clear his throat and then spoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will accept your gift, Lord Harkon.\u00a0 Most gratefully.\u00a0 I will become a vampire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Again. Pure-blooded vampire courses through my veins as well, now. I\u2019m going to be unstoppable.<\/em> He practically vibrated with power.\u00a0 He could barely wait to hunt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAwake at last,\u201d Harkon said. \u201cGood. The power is growing within you, and now you must learn to wield it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Damn but he is gorgeous.\u00a0 And he has no idea what I am. Oh yes, I need to learn the business of being a Vampire Lord but that is simple enough. This is glorious. Few could stand against me before. You might stand against me now, but few other than you could.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>What a pity that I\u2019m going to have to take you down. We could do great things together.\u00a0 But this castle is mine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI keep a stable of thralls about the castle in case you need to feed like the baser vampires, to stave off the sun,\u201d Harkon sneered, his tone superior.<\/p>\n<p><em>Like Babette, you mean? Like Brynjolf? Don\u2019t ever call him \u201cbaser.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s not nearly as strong as either of us but he\u2019s your better in so many other ways, Harkon.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you. I believe I have the basics now.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking forward to using these abilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood.\u00a0 I have a task that I believe will test your new powers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVery well, what is it that I can do for you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo and speak to Garan Marethi. Eventually he smiled; then he left and went in search of Garan Marethi.<\/p>\n<p>__<\/p>\n<p>Brynjolf was smiling at him.\u00a0 It was just the tiniest hint of a smile, but it was accompanied by a devilish light dancing in his yellow eyes. He\u2019d had his fill while he was waiting for Andante\u2019s return; he\u2019d looked around the accessible areas of the castle and had spoken to members of Harkon\u2019s court, and made the acquaintance of the two resident Death Hounds.\u00a0 And Andante could see the desire welling up in him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can feel it, lad.\u00a0 You\u2019re stronger than you were before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I am.\u00a0 I can hardly wait to show you.
