He had sat Lucia on his lap and told both of them about fighting the dragons.<\/p>\n<p>Lucia was fearful.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t want you to get burned up, Papa,\u201d she said quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell neither do I, little one,\u201d he laughed.\u00a0 \u201cDo you want to see what I can do?\u00a0 We have to go outside the gates so that I can show you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lydia tilted her head at him.\u00a0 \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s have a picnic.\u00a0 Come on, grab a snack and let\u2019s go for a walk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The three of them made their way out the gates of Whiterun, Lucia chattering about Braith and Lars and her fox. When they were far enough away, Dardeh turned to them, grinning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOk, wait here.\u00a0 I need to make a pile of rocks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDardeh, what exactly are you doing?\u201d Lydia laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll see.\u00a0 Hang on a moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He built up a cairn, a tower of loose, good-sized stones, fairly tall, then nodded in satisfaction and turned to them, grinning in anticipation. <em>I am now going to show off, how about that.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll right.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to show you what I can do, which is one of the reasons you don\u2019t need to worry about me, OK?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They both smiled and nodded.<\/p>\n<p>He backed up a good distance from the tower and gathered his breath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFUS\u2014RO DAH!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tower of stones exploded, flying away from him in a shower of dust and landing in a soft pitter-patting downrange in the grasses.\u00a0 The Shout echoed across the tundra, even reverberating off Whiterun\u2019s outer walls.<\/p>\n<p>He trotted back to Lydia and Lucia, who were staring at him in awe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWow,\u201d Lucia said. \u201cThat was really\u2026 loud.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dardeh laughed. \u201cYeah. Oops.\u00a0 I forgot how loud it really is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lydia was more solemn.\u00a0 \u201cI knew you were Dragonborn but to see it with my own eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd hear it,\u201d Lucia said, nodding.<\/p>\n<p>Dardeh laughed.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 The dragons are so much louder than that, I don\u2019t even really notice.\u00a0 Want to see another one?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lydia sighed.\u00a0 \u201cDardeh\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Lucia giggled.\u00a0 \u201cYes! Show me!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So Dardeh turned, made sure there were no living things in his path, and Shouted a large plume of frost across the grass.\u00a0 Lucia clapped her hands and giggled.<\/p>\n<p>The three of them sat on the ground and ate apples and cheese, and talked about what he would be doing next.\u00a0 He pointed at the flat spot three-quarters of the way up the huge mountain called the Throat of the World and told them yes, that\u2019s where High Hrothgar is and I have to go back up there next, and then I don\u2019t know what happens after that.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t tell them about Alduin.\u00a0 They were frightened enough as it was.<\/p>\n<p><em>And so am I.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you need a companion, Dardeh?\u201d Lydia had asked him.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t like the idea of you travelling all that way without anyone having your back and, well, I\u2019m good at that.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure that I could ask Ysolda from the marketplace to look after Lucia for a few days.\u201d\u00a0 She had looked so hopeful, so eager to accompany him, that he\u2019d felt truly sorry to turn her down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, Lydia.\u00a0 The most you could do would be to follow me to High Hrothgar and I don\u2019t know how the Graybeards would react to having an unexpected guest.\u00a0 Besides, I have this group of crazies trying to kill me\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dardeh had been attacked again on the way back from Sky Haven Temple by the Miraak cultists and had done well to escape them in part by using every bit of power he could squeeze from Unrelenting Force. He described them to Lydia, told her how they\u2019d been dogging his every move, and then shook his head again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to risk losing you.\u00a0 Not only for my own sake but for Lucia\u2019s.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure Ysolda would take care of her for a few days if we asked nicely. I also am sure she\u2019s a young woman with a life of her own, and we couldn\u2019t ask her to take on a child permanently if something happened to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lydia had agreed, albeit reluctantly.<\/p>\n<p>When he had set out, he had gathered her into a warm embrace and held her close for several long moments.\u00a0 <em>This is as close as we\u2019ll ever get, Lydia, but I love you as though you were my own sister.\u00a0 Thank you for being the person you are.<\/em>\u00a0 Lydia could just as easily have been surly, accepting her duties just because he was the Thane; but instead she was willing, and cheerful, and he considered her a friend. Who have you been talking to?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Well, I wasn\u2019t expecting that kind of reaction.\u00a0 I guess there really is quite a grudge between the Blades and the Graybeards. How am I going to approach this\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was written on Alduin\u2019s wall.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve heard of it.\u00a0 Or rather, it was drawn, etched, on Alduin\u2019s wall.\u00a0 It\u2019s a pretty amazing sight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arngeir made a face.\u00a0 Then he did something that was completely remarkable to Dardeh: he began to rant. Loudly, like a foul-humored old man instead of a Master of the Way of the Voice, a man of peace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Blades.\u00a0 Of course.\u00a0 They specialize in meddling in matters they barely understand.\u00a0 Their reckless arrogance knows no bounds.\u00a0 They have always sought to turn the Dragonborn from the path of wisdom. Have you learned nothing from us?\u00a0 Would you simply be a tool in the hands of the Blades, to be used for their own purposes?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dardeh saw red for a moment, and had to stand and breathe quietly to regain control of himself.\u00a0 <em>A tool?\u00a0 You dare call me a tool?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Incongruously, his mind suddenly presented him the image of the dark Redguard man standing in the tower outside Markarth.\u00a0 <em>What? Who is that and what does he have to do with this?<\/em>\u00a0 The man had radiated strength and defiance, in that dream.\u00a0 <em>Perhaps that\u2019s what I need right now.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaster Arngeir,\u201d he began slowly. \u201cThe Blades consist of one middle aged woman and one old man. That\u2019s it. There are twice as many of you as there are of them. They are the ones helping me, not the other way around.\u00a0 They can do exactly nothing about Alduin unless I do it for them. They cannot kill dragons. I can. It is my Voice, coming from my body, that is being used to do it.\u00a0 It is my decision, and mine alone, what to do and whether or not to do it.\u00a0 But,\u201d and he pointed his finger at Arngeir, \u201cyou are the one who knows the whereabouts of the places where I can learn Shouts. I do not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He paused for a breath, considering his next words carefully.\u00a0 Then he nodded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI cannot decide what path to follow if I do not know where the paths are. If I don\u2019t know that, I am making no choice at all and am as much a tool of the Graybeards as I am of anyone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arngeir had the good grace to look embarrassed at himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, no, of course not.\u00a0 Forgive me, Dragonborn.\u00a0 I have been intemperate with\u00a0 you. But heed my warning.\u00a0 The Blades may say that they serve the Dragonborn, but they do not.\u00a0 They never have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dardeh nodded.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ll keep that in mind.\u00a0 However, they haven\u2019t said a thing about serving me.\u00a0 They want me to help them stop Alduin.\u00a0 Regardless, though, can you teach me the Shout?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u00a0 I cannot teach it to you because I do not know it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the briefest of moments Dardeh wanted to scream.<\/p>\n<p>It seemed that Paarthurnax, the leader of the Graybeards, was the only one who could possibly give him any information, and that he lived in seclusion on the summit of the mountain.\u00a0 It took a great deal of discussion before Dardeh finally determined that he needed to learn yet another Shout before he could reach the summit.\u00a0 Arngeir led him to the courtyard and pointed to a gate beyond which ferocious winds blew and clouds obscured the path.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will show you how to open the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1230\" src=\"https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-1-18-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1833\" height=\"1052\" srcset=\"https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-1-18-3.png 1833w, https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-1-18-3-300x172.png 300w, https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-1-18-3-768x441.png 768w, https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-1-18-3-1024x588.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He pointed to the ground and spoke three words.\u00a0 \u201cLok\u2026 Vah\u2026 Koor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dardeh watched the words appear, in the dragon language he had seen before, and the meaning of them together was \u201cClear Skies.\u201d\u00a0 He knew this as surely as he had known Force.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will grant you my understanding of Clear Skies,\u201d Arngeir told him.\u00a0 \u201cThis is your final gift from us, Dragonborn, use it well.\u00a0 Clear skies will blow away the mist, but only for a time.\u00a0 The path to Paarthurnax is perilous, not to be embarked upon lightly.\u00a0 Keep moving, stay focused on your goal, and you will reach the summit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dardeh nodded, then turned to approach the gate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1231\" src=\"https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-1-18-4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-1-18-4.png 1920w, https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-1-18-4-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-1-18-4-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-1-18-4-1024x576.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He got too close to the mist, just a tiny bit, and was driven to his knees by the blood-freezing cold of it. He cried out in spite of himself and stumbled backward a few paces.<\/p>\n<p>So this is why I need the Shout, he thought as he waited for his limbs to work again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLOK\u2014VAH KOOR!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There was a huge, percussive sound that threw him and the goat running ahead of him off-balance for a moment.\u00a0 The mist dissipated, revealing a path.<\/p>\n<p><em>Well here we go.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>____<\/p>\n<p>He rounded the final turn of the path and saw a word wall, and nothing else.\u00a0 It was white\u00a0 there at the top of the mountain, and silent, with the exception of the wind.<\/p>\n<p>And then it wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 There was the familiar sound of great wings flapping overhead.\u00a0 Dardeh looked around for cover and there was none, aside from the word wall itself.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t dare move. \u00a0He looked up to see a great white dragon descending vertically, in what might once have been a graceful fashion but was now hampered by the tears and tatters of its enormous wings.\u00a0 Dardeh froze, waiting for the attack, gathering his own power to Shout.\u00a0 But nothing happened.\u00a0 The great dragon crashed to the ground, looked him over, and then spoke, in a great thundering voice the likes of which Dardeh had not heard save for that of Alduin himself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrem Yol Lok. Greetings, wundunik.\u00a0 I am Paarthurnax.\u00a0 Who are you? What brings you to my strunmah \u2013 my mountain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Paarthurnax \u2013 is a dragon?\u00a0 Really?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was expecting someone\u2026 shorter,\u201d he said weakly, not knowing what one should say when speaking in Tamrielic to a dragon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1232\" src=\"https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-1-18-5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-1-18-5.png 1920w, https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-1-18-5-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-1-18-5-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/baakay.com\/FanFic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/2-1-18-5-1024x576.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 89vw, (max-width: 767px) 82vw, 740px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Paarthurnax\u2019s snout wrinkled, in what Dardeh hoped was a smile.\u00a0 <em>Otherwise I\u2019m dead<\/em>.\u00a0 He noticed the cracked and missing teeth and dulled eyes and scales.\u00a0 Paarthurnax is ancient, he thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am as my father Akatosh made me.\u00a0 As are you \u2026 Dovahkiin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dardeh nodded.\u00a0 \u201cIndeed.\u00a0 Although I do not know my father.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dragon tilted his head to one side.\u00a0 \u201cDo you not?\u00a0 But there are formalities which must be observed, at the meeting of two of the dov.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>He just called me a dragon.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy long tradition, the elder speaks first.\u00a0 Hear my Thu\u2019um! Feel it in your bones.\u00a0 Match it, if you are Dovahkiin!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paarthurnax turned toward the word wall and roared, and Dardeh heard the words within the massive, keening sound.\u00a0 Yol. Toor. Shul.\u00a0 Fire Breath, the same Shout Alduin had used to destroy Helgen. A word on the wall began to glow not in the blue familiar to Dardeh from other word walls but in a bright, flame red.\u00a0 He ran to it and immediately recognized the writing.\u00a0 Yol.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA gift, Dovahkiin.\u00a0 Understand Fire as the dov do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paarthurnax released some of his power toward Dardeh.\u00a0 It swirled around him and entered him, as the gifts of the Graybeards had done but with the flavor and strength of the dragon souls he had absorbed.\u00a0 He closed his eyes and took it in, smiling, exhilarated, feeling it merge with him and give power to the word he had just learned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow show me what you can do,\u201d the dragon rumbled at him.\u00a0 \u201cGreet me not as mortal, but as dovah!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And Dardeh felt the word rise up from within him.\u00a0 He felt no dread or hesitation as he had the first time he had Shouted.\u00a0 This word came to him in a rush of power and he Shouted, jubilant, knowing in his every fiber that he was in fact of the same stuff as this enormous beast before him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYOL!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was only one word of the Shout, and yet a substantial ball of fire erupted from him and crashed into Paarthurnax, who reacted with the same pleasure he had felt in creating it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAhhhh! Yes!\u00a0 Sossedov los mul.\u00a0 The Dragonblood runs strong in you.\u00a0 It is long since I had the pleasure of speech with one of my own kind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They spoke for a long time, Dardeh and Paarthurnax, after Dardeh confirmed that he wanted to learn the Shout used by the ancient Nords to defeat Alduin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy do you want to learn this Thu\u2019um?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need to stop Alduin,\u201d Dardeh said without hesitation.\u00a0 \u201cHe wants to end the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut why? Why must you stop him? Perhaps this world is meant to end. Maybe this world is the egg of the next.\u00a0 Would you keep it from being born?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dardeh stopped to think.\u00a0 How could he put it?<\/p>\n<p><em>Because there is a little girl with a pet fox who calls me Papa, who hasn\u2019t had a chance to live yet.\u00a0 Because there is a beautiful woman who protects her, because of me.\u00a0 Because there is a sister, who I have yet to meet.\u00a0 Because somewhere there is a man with blue eyes and golden hair who I need to know, must know, before it is too late. And because there is a reason this has happened to me. I don\u2019t know what it is, yet, but there is a reason.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Patience, Dar. You&#8217;ll know when the time is right.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I know, Ma. But thank you for reminding me.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like this world, Paarthurnax.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want it to end. The next world\u2026 will just have to take care of itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He discovered that the Shout he needed, Dragonrend, was not a thing that the mind of an immortal dragon could comprehend, for it carried in it the idea of mortality.\u00a0 Because to learn a Shout was to take it into one\u2019s own being, Paarthurnax could not know it, did not know it any more than Arngeir had. But he had an idea for Dardeh. The ancient Nords who had defeated Alduin in ages past had used both the Shout, which had crippled Alduin by bringing him to ground, and a thing called an Elder Scroll \u2013 an artifact that existed \u201coutside of time,\u201d he said &#8212; to disrupt the flow of events, at the very spot they stood speaking now. That was how they had rid the world of Alduin; not by destroying him, but by casting him adrift in time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou see,\u201d the dragon told him, \u201ctime was shattered here.\u00a0 I knew where Alduin would emerge, but not when. Suleyk.\u00a0 Power.\u00a0 You have it, as do all Dov.\u00a0 But power is inert without action and choice.\u00a0 Think of this as the fire builds in your su\u2019um \u2013 in your breath.\u00a0 Su\u2019um ahrk morah.\u00a0 What will you burn? What will you spare?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dardeh thought of Alduin, strafing the town of Helgen.\u00a0 <em>He spared nothing.\u00a0 Not men, women, children or even the goats and chickens.\u00a0 He burned it all. Was that a choice? Or was it no choice at all?<\/em>\u00a0 And then he thought of his earlier conversation with Arngeir.\u00a0 <em>If I do not know where the paths lie, I cannot make a choice. <\/em>And somehow, as he thought these things, his fire felt stronger and brighter within him.\u00a0 And so did his desire to use it.<\/p>\n<p>Dardeh thanked Paarthurnax and Shouted his way back down to High Hrothgar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you spoke to Paarthurnax,\u201d Arngeir greeted him.\u00a0 \u201cThe Dragonblood burns bright within you. And did you find what you were looking for? I know it. I can feel it.\u00a0 I will not let it go unused.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Then he thought once again of the Thalmor soldier he had killed in Riften, and the Khajiit he had killed slowly, just to watch her suffer.\u00a0 <em>That was power.\u00a0 That was frightening.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>I thought I had no choice.\u00a0 But I do, and I must make it carefully.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>________<\/p>\n<p>Dardeh had rented a room at Candlehearth Hall in Windhelm, and had written a letter to Lydia while he sat in the great room enjoying an ale and the sounds of other people.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t know how long I\u2019ll be gone,\u201d he had written.\u00a0 \u201cI have to go to Winterhold and speak to the mages at the College, and who knows where they will be sending me after that.\u00a0 I\u2019m sending three-quarters of my money back to you with the courier.\u00a0 Use it as you need.\u00a0 Give my love to Lucia and make sure she helps you keep things up.\u00a0 Thank you for everything. \u2013 Dardeh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The courier had raised his eyebrows at the heft of the coin purse.\u00a0 But Dardeh had been practicing using his voice to influence people ever since it had changed from a young man\u2019s squeak into the bottomless deep it had been for years, since long before he\u2019d known part of that ability came from his very blood. He lowered his voice and put as much power into it as he dared. \u201cDon\u2019t even think about it, son,\u201d he\u2019d told the young man. \u201cI know exactly how many septims are in that purse and if even a single one is missing when Lydia gets it, I will find you. I don\u2019t think you would enjoy that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The courier\u2019s eyes had gotten huge.\u00a0 \u201cNo, sir. No problem at all.\u00a0 I\u2019ll make sure it\u2019s delivered right away.\u201d He had darted away, and Dardeh waited until he was out of sight to burst into giggles.<\/p>\n<p><em>That was mean, but a voice this deep has to be good for something once in awhile.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And then he had tried to sleep.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, he had fallen asleep, easily enough, and had slept well for a time.\u00a0 But then the dream had come.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, he found himself somewhere in the Reach. The rocks and junipers were unmistakable, though he didn\u2019t know exactly where he was.\u00a0 There was a campfire, and a fur tent, and before them stood a huge Redguard man, dressed in the robes of the men of the Alik\u2019r, with a matched set of scimitars at his sides. He was dark, with rough features and penetrating green eyes without a hint of kindness in them. Use it well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWho are you?\u201d Dardeh asked him, although he could not hear his own voice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am Jine af-Avik, son of my son.\u00a0 Of Stros M\u2019Kai.\u00a0 And of a line of those with power such as yours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you talking about?\u201d Dardeh tried to ask the man.\u00a0 \u201cSon of my son? \u00a0Are you trying to tell me that you are my grandfather?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are many sons. We have great power. And when men stand in our way we kill them all. That is our way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the dream faded.
